The Learning Exchange is grounded in the idea that universities can and should be more connected to the critical issues facing communities today. But we are not driven by ideology. We are driven by curiosity and the understanding that everyone has something to give.
How can complex social issues be understood and addressed more effectively without focusing on needs and problems? The Learning Exchange offers a different approach which values and builds on individual and community strengths.
We know from our experiences over the past ten years that there is no shortage of people who care about their communities and are looking for ways to strengthen them. People in marginalized communities like the Downtown Eastside have a wealth of life experience to share and are eager to make a contribution. Community organizations have a rich history of bringing people together to meet needs and promote wellbeing. Faculty have interests in making what they teach relevant and applicable. Students want to make a difference and have enormous energy and talent to offer.
The Learning Exchange strives to create environments where people can get to know each other, pursue shared interests, learn from each other and, in doing so, change the world.
